Classic concert to mark 50 years of Montessori Society

St Nicholas Montessori Society of Ireland have announced a concert date re-welcoming flagship acappella vocal ensemble Anúna to the beautiful surrounds of Christ Church Dún Laoghaire on Saturday, February 8.

St Nicholas Montessori Society Ireland was founded in 1970 by Sighle Fitzgerald and a group of like-minded educators. Since then the Society has gone on to become Ireland’s leading provider of, and exponent of, Montessori Education. Education is delivered both through the St. Nicholas Montessori College, which educates graduate level Montessori teachers and Early Years professionals who work throughout the national school system and early years sector in Ireland, and through the St. Nicholas Montessori School, which teaches primary aged school children using the Montessori Method to over 130 children.

2020 marks a particularly special year for the Society which will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary throughout the year with a series of educational / development and fundraising events.

How to Write About Your Artwork with Sue Rainsford – Sat 29 February

Creating art requires more writing than you might have imagined. From artist statements to funding applications, your ability to write about your art is as important as what you create.

ArdNetdlr is hosting a workshop on the subject at the dlr LexIcon on February 29 with Sue Rainsford, the current Writer-in-Resident at Maynooth University.

Sign up quickly for a place! Don’t forget: Current ArtNetdlr members receive a discount on tickets.

Where to Eat this February

Casper & Giumbini’s

  • The Pavilion, Dún Laoghaire
  • https://casperandgiumbinis.ie/
  • Contact – +353 (0) 1 4432699

What’s special about Casper & Giumbini’s?

Looking for a last minute Valentine’s reservation? Want to try something new? Looking for the perfect place to end a stroll down the seafront?

Casper & Giumbini’s is ready and waiting with a plate piled high with fresh seafood or one of their trademark hamburgers.

We love this new showstopper of a restaurant because Kim and David O’Driscoll, siblings and co-owners of DeVille’s in Dalkey, used it as an opportunity to pay tribute to their roots. Long-time town residents may remember that original Casper & Giumbini’s on Wicklow Street in the 1980s by Kim and David’s father.

The name is a throwback, but the restaurant is a very exciting addition to Dún Laoghaire’s food scene, and we’re glad to see it!

TwoBeans Coffee

  • 11 George’s Street Lower
  • https://www.twobeans.ie/
  • Contact – 086 411 7869

What’s special about TwoBeans

Sunlight is still at a premium in January, so why not get stop in for some sunshine in a cup at TwoBeans.

Not only is the coffee here scrummy, but TwoBeans keeps a focus on ethical and sustainable practices through its partnerships with Europe’s best coffee roasters. The shop only works with roasters who buy coffee beans directly from the farmer, guaranteeing them a fair price for their hard work.

Plus, the baristas only use Irish organic milk certified by the National Dairy Council.

Welcome to Dún Laoghaire Town – New Business Spotlight

Welcome to Dún Laoghaire Town – New Business Spotlight

Please join us in welcoming new businesses to our town each month, help them find their feet in Dún Laoghaire by dropping in and supporting them.

The Little Wooden Peg

  • Just opened at – 55 George’s Street, Dún Laoghaire Town
  • Speciality – High quality natural, handmade clothing for children
  • Website – https://thelittlewoodenpeg.com/

Those with keen eyes and a love of sustainable children’s wear have already noticed that Dún Laoghaire has a new addition at 55 George’s Street Upper.

The Little Wooden Peg is the first permanent high street space for a business that has been among us for a while already.  Ruth Anna Coss, the visionary behind the Little Wooden Peg, started out sourcing clothes for an Instagram-driven online store before meeting up with other local businesses (like Under the Willow Paper Co and reuzi) to run pop-up shops in the Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre.

Ruth’s vision is to offer Irish families access to heirloom pieces that are non-toxic, handmade and generally sustainable. She traces supply chains to ensure products come from ethical sources  and then tries and tests the pieces and toys on her own children.

The Little Wooden Peg is the perfect antidote to fast fashion for kids (and mums, too). Their clothes aren’t trend-driven or fashion-led, and they’re so well made that they’ll get handed down to siblings and cousins without looking worn or dated.

Ruth’s bread and butter is clothes for newborns and children up to 8 years old. But the store truly carries something for everyone, and kids up to 14 and mums will also find pieces suited to them. You can also expect sustainable toys as well as products for the whole family from local lifestyle brands.

Keep an eye on this space: the Little Wooden Peg is still awaiting a full launch, but Ruth already envisions using part of her gorgeous shop to go back to her roots by offering a pop-up space for local designers and craftspeople and even a potential workshop space for community-based artisans and ventures.

February’s featured deal comes from Frewen & Aylward, who are kindly offering 20% off exclusively for DúnLaoghaireTown.ie readers and subscribers! Pop in during the month of February and mention the website and the code Feb2020 to get your discount.

Locals will know Frewen & Aylward Menswear as one of Dún Laoghaire town’s most established businesses. It’s been in town since 1962, and today, it remains owner-occupied and a premium destination shop for shoppers with exclusive taste not just in Dún Laoghaire but from around Ireland.

Customers come for the exclusivity of brands and the superior level of service. If you’ve never been in, then you’re missing out. Frewen & Aylward Menswear is one of the few places that you can get tailoring all year round. Richard, the resident tailor, creates works of art in the shop, but he’ll also travel to your house, office, and even work out of hours. Twice a year, the shop hosts a tailor from Italy: the next event is April 4.

Ladies might know the store as a place to drag your husbands for occasion-wear. One of the biggest laments the team has heard over the years is that there’s nothing of its calibre for women. That’s about to change: the team are looking at the possibility of converting part of the top floor into a space for ladies boutiques.

Are you on the hunt for a gift this month? Pop in for plenty of men’s accessories, including wallets, boxers, and socks. Drop the code Feb2020 and mention DúnLaoghaireTown.ie for an exclusive 20% discount across the store.
