Orange Water at Sandycove Beach (June 25)

Related to:

Cloudy orange water was spotted at popular swimming spot Sandycove and surrounding areas. After water sample test where carried out it was discovered that the cause was a micro algae called “Noctiluca Scintillans” and not the recent sewage spillage in Dublin bay.

This species of algae is yellow, orange or orange / red and is harmless to people. The appearance of this algal bloom is not directly associated with the waste water overflows associated with the temporary bathing prohibition. We have been advised that this is a natural  summer phenomenon in response to long day length, high nutrients and warm water.
